Borders by sculptor Steinunn Thorarinsdottir

Though we stay quite busy at the Pure Sculpture studio, we love to make time to check out art happenings around the metroplex. On March 4th, the PS team took a field trip to visit Borders, a sculpture exhibit by Icelandic artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottir. And lucky us, we even had the pleasure of meeting Thorarinsdottir, who happened to be passing by as the PS team enjoyed the exhibit.

On display in the Dallas Arts District, the exhibit includes 13 pairs of life-sized human figures, composed of cast iron and aluminum. Most of the sculptures are installed on the top of a 12ft high wall but a few pairs are at ground level, allowing audiences to interact with the sculptures.

"The pairs of figures mirror each other in silent conversation and form unseen borders that in some instances the viewer can cross.  The show reflects on the opposites of human existence –on division but also on unity," says Thorarinsdottir in her artist statement.

Dallas is the third stop for this exhibit; New York City and Seattle were previous installation sites. Thanks to the curation efforts of Patricia Meadows, and the generosity of avid art collectors Craig and Kathryn Hall, the Borders exhibit is free and open to the public through July 2013. Additionally, Erick Baker with Unified Fine Arts worked with Thorarinsdottir on the installation of this marvelous exhibit.
